The One Question That Makes Decluttering Click

Would I buy this again today?

This is one of my favorite questions to ask — because it’s so simple, it almost feels too easy.

When you’re holding something and unsure what to do with it, pause and ask:

Would I buy this again today?

Not “did this cost money?”
Not “might I need this someday?”
Just… would I actually re-buy it right now?

Most of the time, the answer comes quickly.

Why this question works

I see this weekly in homes — people keeping things out of habit, guilt, or because they’ve just never stopped to question them.

This question cuts through all of that.

It removes the pressure to justify past decisions and focuses on the life you’re living now.

The mindset shift that changes everything

Your home isn’t meant to store every version of you you’ve ever been.

It’s meant to support the life you’re living today.

Old hobbies, outdated styles, things you tolerate but don’t love — they quietly take up space and energy.

Letting them go isn’t wasteful. It’s intentional.

Where this question works best

Clothes you never reach for
Kitchen gadgets collecting dust
Decor you feel “meh” about
Random storage bins full of who-knows-what

If the answer is no, trust it.

How to try this without getting overwhelmed

Don’t start with an entire room.

Start with:
One drawer
One shelf
One category

Ask the question item by item and move on.

Most clients tell me this single mindset shift is what finally makes decluttering feel doable — and even a little freeing.

If you want help applying this in your home or don’t know where to start, I’m always happy to help.
